Bob Duey – SLHS Class of  1957 Baseball and Football Athlete

Sports have always played a significant roll in my life. From Elementary School baseball to football & baseball at CAL, competition has been a driving force in any success I’ve had.  Of course, I was lucky to have a twin brother to compete with and against.

When we were growing up in San Leandro, summers meant baseball. The Boys & Girls Club had a traveling team coached by Jerry Lyons.  We went on to the American Legion League where we got to play with and against some of the future Bay Area Stars.  I still brag about our 6th grade softball team at Washington Elementary winning the city championship.

As San Leandro High School players Dick and I received many honors, including:

All Alameda County, 1st team, baseball,All Alameda County, 1st team, defense, football, Member East-West Grid Classic, played at Keysar Stadium.

During my playing years I was inspired by the people I played with, against and for. Names like Jim Johnston (baseball coach & future major league scout), Curt Flood (McClymonds Standout & future leader in free agency for baseball) and Joe Kapp (CAL quarterback & future NFL & CFL star), were people whose talent and work ethic inspired me to try harder.

A memorable moment occurred at the end of a muddy HS football game, SL vs San Lorenzo. As Dick and I walked off the field, the opposing coach stopped us to say that he would be coaching at CAL the next year and he wanted us on his team.  That encounter led our path to CAL & our freshman coach & long-time friend, John Ralston.   The highlight of our football career at CAL was playing on the 1959 Rose Bowl Team.

I left Berkeley for San Francisco and the UC Med Center where I received a Dr. of Pharmacy degree. Through the years I owned & operated 7 pharmacies located in several Bay Area cities.  I helped pioneer the computerization of pharmacies in several states, having the first in-house computer in California.  Giving back to the community has always been important to my wife, Pat, and I.  We support San Leandro Rotary, San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, San Leandro Sports Foundation, San Leandro Education Foundation and other organizations that are special to us.  Since we both grew up in San Leandro our memories are there and we continue to make new ones.

The twins - Bob at end and Dick at fullback - were selected as Preps- of- the- Week for their great defensive work when San Leandro won over Hayward 24-6 last Friday night in the final ACQL game of the 1956 season.
