David Richard Beaver – Coach and Contributor
Dave was hired by the San Leandro Unified School District in 1949 as Supervisor of Physical Education, a positon he held from 1949 to 1967. In this position, Dave organized and oversaw education activities for 14 schools. “Planning with architects and engineers he was responsible for building three gymnasiums, two pools, all field facilities for football, track, basketball, volleyball and other pertinent physical education facilities.”
Dave was determined that every child in the city would have an opportunity to learn the essentials of swimming. He teamed with Frank DeMello, longtime manager at Farrelly Pool, to expand the existing swim-to-live program. Dave organized and coached a swim club with a cooperative group of parents and youngsters and from that group a teaching staff from the swim-to-live program. He worked with the American Red Cross to certify water safety instructors through the swim to live program.
