It has been at least 15 years since the Pirates last hosted a track and field meet at San Leandro High School.  “For the last five years, I have had use of only 8 hurdles that I managed to piece together from parts of broken hurdles,” said hurdles coach Martin Capron. ” I need at least 10 to make one lane of hurdles, to run the event it takes need 80.” In fact, San Leandro’s Track team has also been without starting blocks, high jump area and pads, long jump pit, pole vault area and pads. The last couple of years the team has practice at Bancroft’s all-weather track because the old track at the High School was not “runnable.” The team traveled to Chabot College for home track meets. But thanks to Measure M and San Leandro Voters,  those days are gone.

New equipment arrived today to furnish the new track at San Leandro High School. The new equipment and track will put our Student/Athletes on a “level playing field” as other area High Schools. But more importantly, this investment in our children will incentivize more boys and girls to get involved with athletics and become healthier and better citizens.
