Pirate Tracksters excell at prestigious Stanford Invitational

March 30, 2013. Eleven State bests were set at the prestigious Stanford Invitation this weekend. In the boy competitions Heritage’s Frank Kurtz edged San Leandro’s Christian Carter in a monster 400 m race ( 7 runners under 49s) with a state leading time of 47.32 to Christian’s 47. 94 to rank 1 -2 in the State. Castro Valley blazed to a 41.84 to win the 4 x 100 over De La Salle. San Leandro mistimed their second hand-off to finish in 6th place. San Leandro enacted some amount of revenge by placing  3rd in the 4 x 400 in a very good time of 3:23.54. The first three legs kept the race close and Carter, running anchor leg, caught two teams at the wire.

In other boy highlights, Takkarist McKinley, all 6’4″ 240 lbs of him, won the 100 in 10.71 aganist a speedy field that saw 6 boys run under 11s. Bishop O’Dowd’s Eugene Hamilton III won the mile with an outstanding 200 meter kick in a State leading time of 4:12.74. James Traylor of Berkeley High won the 110 HH over Marquiss Morris of De La Salle with a State leading time of 14.21s.

In the girls competition, San Leandro had two individual winners, as Gabriella Cantrell won the 100m in 11.96 and Kortni Smyers-Jones won the 100 high hurdles in 14.37, revenging her defeat to Patty Perry of Vacaville in the semi-finals.
