This team has been flying under the radar all year, playing determined, tenacious defense and a discipline offense with undersized athletes playing with teamwork and precision. No,  I’m not talking about the De La Salle Spartans. I’m talking about the San Leandro High Pirates’ Basketball team, and with a 25-3 record and a trip to the NCS Finals for the first time in School History the Pirates are on the radar now.

The Pirates beat Freedom High School in the NCS Division I semifinals 55 to 53 on a baseline jumper by Dejon Burdreaux at the buzzer to advance to the NCS Championship game against Deer Valley at Saint Mary College this Friday.

Burdreauxs jumper capped a 9-2 run by San Leandro in the final three minutes while taking advantage of three Freedom turnovers during the run. Trailing 53-50 with 49 seconds left, Burdreaux hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 53-all with 35 seconds left. The falcons (19-9) turned the ball over with 8.1 seconds, giving the Pirates the ball under their own basket. Burdreaux, who finished a game-high 22 points, took the inbounds pass and quickly moved down court before pulling up from the right baseline for the game-winner.
