Far left, not sure, from left Tony Lema, Casey Stengul, Yogi Berra, Chris Cannizaro – the first guy from San Leandro to make the Big Leagues. Thanks to Jon Simonian for this timeless picture.
August 23rd, 2014 – The San Leandro High School Pirates met the Pacific High School Vikings on the field of battle (SLHS) for a rematch of a rivalry game played at Burrell Field in March of in 2012. The game is limited to only those alumni from the Pacific High era.
The 1st rivalry game was the” last game” played at the old Burrell Field the last reminiscent of Pacific High School. The Stadium was tore down shortly thereafter and replaced with a brand new state-of-the-art stadium thanks to the voters of San Leandro who approved Measure M.
Pacific High School closed in 1986 and yet after all these year passions run deep for the players on both sides in this closely knit town. The Pirates won the first game 18-0 and maintained bragging right – until now. The Viking revenged the lost this year with a 28-0 victory. The series is now tied 1 all and there is a call for a rubber match. Maybe.
